Washington miracle

The job of the President of the United States is incredibly hard, physically and emotionally draining and very dangerous, as we all know from Lincoln to Reagan.

After gruelling campaigns, we, the people, or some 25% of us in real terms make a man president, and then we expect a fair share of political miracles.

Several industries feed on the words and actions out of Washington, and, oh, right there is also the secondary function of being the leader of the free world, whatever that exactly may mean.

The miracles tend to not happen, instead the ordinary pettiness of humans plays out for the world to see unless the mantle of secrecy is draped over life.

It is no wonder we almost missed a true miraculous transformation in D.C.

The president's right hand of national security turned into a gigantic middle finger. Not through a marvelous feat of genetic engineering, not because political scientists found the sorcerer's stone and rubbed it just the right way.

It was accomplished by one small sentence.
